What the hell does gender identity have to do with fracking?

On the blacklisting of eco-feminists

by Tara Prema

It’s a plot filled with anonymous denunciations, secret meetings, betrayal, dissidents, blacklists and infiltrators. For those just tuning in, this shitshow is the latest infighting on the left, where ideological purity and individual identity are all the rage – literally. Welcome to a new era of #LeftFail, where identity politics trumps everything, including strategy.

When we subtract the drama, what’s happened is that a couple of social justice groups (mostly hyper-moral ultra-leftist white college kids) has launched a campaign to blacklist people who disagree with their answer to a philosophical question. It’s not a question about the nature of capitalism or justice or exploitation or some other relevant topic, though. The question that’s tying the left in knots is: “What is a woman?”

If you answer, “An adult female human,” you could be blacklisted. The correct answer nowadays is, “Anyone who identifies as a woman.”

This begs the question: “What does it mean to ‘identify’ as a woman?” The correct answer here is, “To feel like a woman; to feel as if one is a woman.”

If you ask what it means to “feel like a woman,” there is no coherent answer, just the word: “Transphobe!”

So what is a transphobe? Anyone who recognizes that men can take hormones, get surgery, and sometimes pass as women, but they cannot become female.

Anyone who wants to abolish gender roles, meaning masculine and feminine stereotypes that dictate how boys and girls are expected to behave.

Any person or group who defines “woman” as “adult human female.” That is, someone born female, with female biology.

This list includes midwives, traditional communities, radical feminists, and many others. It includes peace activist Cindy Sheehan and comedian Roseanne Barr. It includes Deep Green Resistance.

Radical feminists find that gender is a ridiculous set of oppressive stereotypes that have nothing to do with biology. Gender is not a spectrum or a binary or some kind of fluid – it is a hierarchy. Gender stereotypes dictate that men are masculine and dominant, and women are feminine and submissive, and that is what you are.

Rejecting useless and harmful gender stereotypes is a basic principle of feminism, widely accepted since the 1970s. But nowadays when we try to discuss it, academics and activists alike denounce and blacklist us.

There is a difference between a person’s sex and his or her gender. Radical feminists believe that sex is innate – it’s the biology we are born with, our DNA and secondary sex characteristics, like breasts and testes. Sex is in-born, and gender is constructed – that is, imposed on us by societal stereotypes.

On the other hand, genderists believe that gender is innate – that somehow we are born with some form of masculine or feminine essence baked in. Biological sex, therefore, is constructed, by means of surgery and hormones.

Genderists: “If your internal sense of pink lace or ball games doesn’t match your genitalia, you need opposite-sex hormones and an operation! Or at least a whole new set of clothes, makeup, and a name change. And a million bucks. And a reality show. And a magic mirror to whisper flattering things.”

Midwives are being told they can’t use the term “women” when referring to those of us who give birth and nurse children. Because that is transphobic. Midwives face blacklisting by their own professional association for refusing to call mothers “birthing parents.”

A traditional matrilineal community was harassed about having women’s circles until they started holding them in secret, away from the white dudes.

White dudebros arriving at a traditional indigenous encampment: “Hey, you’re doing gender wrong. Let me mansplain to you about why this postmodern theory I just read about is superior to your traditional teachings passed on for hundreds of generations. Wait, where you going?*

Anti-feminists have infiltrated radical feminist groups to spy out where their events are being held, so they can disrupt them by barging in or by phoning in death threats. In another case, a police informant joined a west coast radical environmental group and used the wedge issue of gender identity politics to start a faction fight that ended when everyone quit.

And now we find ourselves watching as mass media celebrate transwomen as the epitome of womanhood. And we find we are ostracized by the gender cheerleaders at universities, conferences, and within the environmental movement.

WHITE MALE LEFTISTS SAY WOMEN ARE NO LONGER ALLOWED TO DEFINE FOR OURSELVES WHO WE ARE AND WHO OUR SISTERS ARE.

Stop the Frack Attack (STFA) recently unleashed a spasm of horizontal hostility on the environmental left. This anti-fracking coalition is led by Rising Tide, which has staked its ideological purity on denouncing those who consider biological sex to be a material human condition. Here, Rising Tide is targeting not frackers, but Deep Green Resistance, and its radical feminist members, because – we are told – those feminists are evil “cis” oppressors.

Note that only feminists are singled out here. This big, broad coalition includes Christians and gun clubs, anarchists and peaceniks. But feminists are the one group that must be denounced or beaten down, according to some trans advocates.

Along with the radicals, STFA includes the Idaho Conservation League, the United Christian Church, and the Denton Stakeholder Drilling Advisory Group. Did STFA’s central committee interrogate these good citizens on where they stand on the burning question of “What is a woman?” Are we to assume they all agree 100% that the categories of male and female no longer exist, except as semantics?

And if the Denton Stakeholders issued a public statement that Caitlyn Jenner has only changed clothes and makeup, not sex – would Stop the FA excommunicate them too?

Or is shunning a punishment reserved only for feminists?

And – final question – what the hell does this have to do with fracking?

One thing for sure: the oil and gas executives are laughing all the way to the bank. They know what some of us don’t – that infighting is like civil war: the only winners are the vulture capitalists.

  1. Great post! only analytical tidbit missing is the religion thing. Gender is a religion in the same way as all other religions. The entire concept lives in a mind-soul space that is entirely outside of biology. As long as we fail to fight religion, we are incomplete in our fight, and it gives fodder for others to denigrate us, because we are inconsistent. We can’t with one hand combat pandering to trans*, but with the other hand pander to Sharia proponents… and that IS what is happening right now in the movement.
Additionally, there is also very little common ground between Deep Green (in the philosophical sense, not DGR as an organisation) and the light greens. The anti-frackers tend to be very light green… they wish maintenance of this crappy CIV, with only a few bandaids to keep the ship from sinking too fast.
Frankly I’d prefer it sink sooner rather than later.
Light greens are entirely useless, as a liberal feminists, not accomplishing any social change that is significant, might as well stay home for all it’s worth.
I want to see CIV fall.

  2. I heard that DGR had been banned from participating on this anti-fracking conference, or what it was, and also non-members if Im not mistaken ? People who had valuable information on this insane environmental destructive process.

Yet for some reason, how other organisations run their organisations is more important to lash out against for these “environmentalists” than actually try and find a way to stop fracking.

The left, if it even exists any more besides a few groups of people here and there, is in bad, bad shape these days.

    • lol. so true. Someone posted the meme that “both wings belong to the same bird”. So true. Humanity is all of us. The planet is all of us. DGR gotsta exist beyond the false L/R dichotomy. All distinctions are false and fall away except one – survival.

  3. Since when does Big Pharma give a rat’s patootie about the environment? They have more lobbyists than the oil companies. Why are growth hormones in animals bad, but GnRH agonists and/or hormones in kids are good? I don’t want growth hormones in the food I eat, but it’s perfectly safe and ethical to pump 11 year old kids full of GnRH agonists and/or cross gender hormones. What specifically have transgender groups done for the environment?

Someone needs to tell these hopelessly misguided more politically correct than thou people that sterilizing children and endangering their health is a human rights abuse. It’s not like the information isn’t out there. Drugging children with GnRH agonists because they aren’t “masculine” or “feminine” enough is Orwellian. For freaking sakes, 11 year old male children are getting estrogen. Stop pretending that this is a good thing, perfectly natural, and magical thinking will make it so. I’m not buying it, and I know what I see with my own eyes. Things are being done to human primates that PETA would be pitching a fit over if it was being done to any other primate. Seriously, PETA would be protesting in the streets. Imagine this experiment on primates. Let’s take a young primate and pump it full of powerful chemicals that will block its natural sexual maturity. We are going to intentionally prevent it from reaching sexual maturity by administering powerful drugs. Next, we are going to give it hormones so that it will take on characteristics of the opposite sex. Then, we are going to mutilate its genitals. Do you think PETA would put up with this? Scientists have sequenced the genome of the chimpanzee and found that humans are 96 percent similar to the great ape species. This is our heritage. Primates don’t change their sex and all primates reproduce sexually. Why are humans the only primate in which we must entertain this cockamamie notion that we can actually change our sex?

Please don’t bring up rare disorders of sexual development (intersex) because intersex is not the same thing as transgender, and every major intersex organization makes a distinction between intersex and transgender. Does the existence of rare intersex conditions mean that primates aren’t sexually dimorphic and we reproduce sexually? No, it doesn’t because intersex arises from sexual reproduction. It’s kind of like saying because some people are born missing a leg, it means humans aren’t bipedal.

The fact that some men and women are different doesn’t make them the opposite sex. It just means they are different. I chalk it up to human variation. Little boys who aren’t sufficiently “masculine” enough are being drugged, sterilized, and mutilated. Five year old girls are being told that they are really “boys” because they don’t play with the proper toys. Some plastic surgeons remove the healthy breasts of teenage girls. If they are attracted to other girls, they are no longer lesbian, but “men”, thus heterosexual. In Iran, gay men and lesbians are actually being coerced into sex reassignment surgery, and it’s been going on for years. All this smacks of a new, peculiar form of eugenics. We don’t have a precise word for it, but we know it’s happening. Environmentalists of all people aren’t afraid to ask the difficult questions, and we put our lives on the line for the right to speak truth to power.

I’ve been involved in environmental activism for decades. In fact, I was talking about climate change before it was cool. I’ve protested against Monsanto and its Frankenstein genetically modified seeds, PG&E’s Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant, the destruction of the boreal forests in Canada and the Alberta tar sands, and the logging of old growth redwood forests. I’ve done it all, and I keep chugging along. I can say with all certainty that this trans insanity will come crashing down one day. Unfortunately, we are going to see a lot of drugged and damaged bodies. The sterilization of children is unforgiveable. These naïve people will have a lot to answer for.

    • I am fully in agreement with you on the issue of putting hormones into children, and the larger issue of “gender” being a feeling more important to respect than the biological reality of sex.

I am an environmentalist, an environmental scientist, and part of my occupation is as a regulator. I am also a freshly radical feminist and an anti-capitalist. But I do disagree with you on some of the environmental issues you raise. This disagreement comes from my understanding of the underlying science as part of my job, and probably largely from viewing these problems as having a different ultimate source. If I disagreed with you on the subject of nuclear power, would this mean I couldn’t work with you on addressing global climate change? Maybe yes – they could be related, maybe no – because we’re ultimately worried about the same thing. I’d still want to work with you somehow, because I’m that concerned about climate change.

But what the original post brings up is a more disconcerting requirement of ideological purity on largely-unconnected issues, such as fracking and transgenderism among the larger population of left-leaning folk. If I disagreed with you on fracking, would this mean I couldn’t work with you on the issue of how transgenderism is poisoning a whole generation of kids? The reverse is what’s going on with STFA and DGR.

Why is there this requirement that everyone agrees on whatever political issue is brought up in an organization, regardless of how distant it may be from the issues the group hopes to address? True, I might be able to trace a convoluted connection between transgenderism and fracking through libertarianism, capitalism and “ownership society”, which might prove my position “more correct”. Being a systems-thinking, wholistic sort of person, it would be my preference if all these loose ends could be tied together into a coherent whole. Would disagreement with part of that system indicate a weakness, an insufficient dedication to the “main goal”? Would it be a good idea to insist on agreement? Does it need to be done? How do we determine which sorts of sideline political disagreements are actually an underpinning of a central goal, and which ones are just a distraction?

Could capitalist Ecomodernists work with DGR folks to address climate change successfully? Probably not. Could people who don’t really have a strong opinion on GMOs (and don’t care to be pinned down to one) work with DGR folks to address climate change successfully? How close is the issue of transgenderism to environmental issues?

Are there any Baby Boomers around here who could tell me if this is the same sort of ideological purity wars that were going on in the Left in the 60s/70s? A continuation of the same?

    • Very well said! You have really outlined everything wrong with the whole “My feelings trump reality” crap. I’ve compared the trans cult to creationists before but to be fair to the creationists, I’ve never gotten mutilation, rape, and death threats from them. Trans is a religion and we must all believe it or else.

I view co-opting intersex conditions as yet another example of the appropriation of oppressed groups that trans is so famous for. They like to declare dead lesbians and gays as “trans”. Also Audrey Hepburn and Dennis Rodman are trans. It’s the same with the argument that “humans aren’t sexually dimorphic because of intersex people.”
It is also disgusting, considering how having an intersex condition often singles you out for medical abuse and those people have enough trouble already. Then again, considering what’s happening to gender-nonconforming children, I guess the trans cult is a big fan of that.

I am glad you brought up the way Iran treats its lesbian and gay population. So-called “sex-change” operations were invented as a way to force lesbians and gays to appear to be heterosexual. Apartheid South Africa did the same thing. If you don’t know you’re history then you’re doomed to repeat it. The trans movement is minority self-hating homosexuals and majority heterosexuals who wish they were us, with a large amount of men pretending to be lesbians. It’s another tactic for men to try to gain sexual access to us.

It is eugenics to destroy the heath of children. Really, there are two sides of genderism. You have the trans cult on the left who’s solution is that if you don’t conform than you must be the opposite sex and you need cross-sex hormones, puberty blockers, surgery, and a lifetime of destroyed health. Then on the right you have people who are oftentimes (but no always) motivated by a patriarchal religion and think that the solution is to enforce more. “No son you will not play with Barbie”. There are tons of therapists promoting transgenderism but there are other ones (not all religious) who will force your son to play with GI Joe not Barbie, or the other way around.

  5. Liberalism has always been the religion of the sovereign individual, from the days of John Locke to today. Logically, what they should do is keep fracturing until they end up with groups made of only one person each. Since they believe that power lies in self-identification, these groups should be the most powerful of them all, more powerful than any government or corporation. They can then take over the world and remake it in their image.

  6. Different cultures around the world have different teachings about sex and gender … They all have their own definitions of “who is a woman.”

Every single culture in the world knows that there are a class of humans who grow and birth children, and a class of persons with dicks. Everything else is just mythology.

  8. EDITED WITH REPLIES FROM GENDER IS WAR

Here’s a lil newsflash… You think gender is an oppressive hierarchy? Then don’t perform gender.

    – HERE’S A BIG NEWSFLASH — MANY OF US DON’T PERFORM GENDER.
BUT INDIVIDUAL CHOICES MAKE NO DIFFERENCE IN THE BIG PICTURE.
WE’RE TALKING ABOUT WOMEN AS A CLASS, NOT ABOUT INDIVIDUAL POSTURING.

Feel free to “abolish gender” ( whatever that means) for yourselves. But you don’t get to decide what anyone who isn’t you gets to do with their
    lives.

    – WE SAY WE DO GET TO DECIDE WHAT WE DO WITH OUR LIVES AS WOMEN.
FOR SOME OF US THAT MEANS NO MALES, NO PENISES, NO ONE BORN MALE IN OUR LIVES.
YOUR “RIGHT” TO BARGE INTO MY SPACE ENDS WHEN I TELL YOU TO LEAVE.

The reason you’re getting “no-platformed” is because no one likes a bigot, and no one us required to tolerate the presence of bigotry.

    – YOU’RE DISCRIMINATING AGAINST FEMINISTS IN PUBLIC AS A “SOLUTION” FOR FEMINISTS EXCLUDING BORN-MALES FROM THEIR OWN PRIVATE SPACES.
    THAT IS DERANGED.

What makes you think you’re owed a platform on someone else’s dime?

    – WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU’RE ENTITLED TO COME INTO WOMEN’S SPACES WHERE WE DON’T WANT YOU?

Host your own events. Exclude who you wish to exclude. And everyone else can decide for themselves with whom they choose to associate.

    – WE DO. AND WE GET FUCKING DEATH THREATS FOR IT.
EVEN INCLUSIVE EVENTS GET TARGETED BY YOUR HATE GROUPS FOR PETTY REASONS.
WE HAVE TRANS PEOPLE TRYING TO CRASH AND DISRUPT MEMORIAL SERVICES FOR MURDERED WOMEN. THIS IS WOMAN-HATING AT ITS MOST BLATANT.

  10. You mentioned a police informant bringing up genderism and driving a wedge through a group. It was and still is very common for the government, FBI in particular to infiltrate groups like these. I also bet they are using paid agents in online communities.

    • Yes this is an issue that I guess many can see as “just another conspiracy theory” but fact of the matter is that various institutions of law and order routinely do these things.
Of course those in power, and those who benefits by this power arrangement, just won’t sit silently and watch people organise against them and challenge them and whatever they can do to make it harder for people to organise they will do that. Which I think is so much easier today when a lot of communication among industrial humans happens online.
